Germ Buster?

It’s the season of all the germs.  Our family has already been sick for the majority of January and so I have spent the last two weeks googling and soliciting other remedies for illness busting and prevention for my family.  In all that reading, I came across the many massive health benefit clai med to be true of turmeric.  It apparently does everything from curing cancer to boosting your memory.  As with everything, I take wellness claims with a grain of salt.  No one thing is going to cure everything, or it would already be cured, right?

Some Recent Research and Cautions

What does appear to be true of curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric that provides all these miraculous benefits) as proven in multiple recent studies is that its an anti-inflamatory and helps boost your immune system.  This article does a really nice job of summarizing some of the current research and cautions about taking too much stock in the trendy herb or supplement of the day.

Couldn’t Hurt

I figure, there’s a long history of turmeric use as a holistic remedy for a wide variety of conditions and some recent evidence to say that it probably does work, so what’s the harm in adding it to my diet a little here and there?

Delicious Turmeric Tea

We cook with turmeric every once in a while, as we love the flavors of the south Asian region.  But I also experimented a little and found a delightful addition to my tea drinking habit:   fresh turmeric and ginger tea.  It tastes fabulous with a splash of coconut milk and if it has an added benefit of boosting my immune system and reducing inflammation, then even better.

Ingredients

turmeric root ( I buy this at my local international grocery store – I haven’t seen it at the bigger chains.  It looks just like ginger, only orange, and typically smaller)

ginger root

cinnamon stick

coconut milk or honey for serving

Directions

Bring 16 oz water to a boil.  Cut a thin sliver off each root, about 1-2 inches long.  Add more turmeric or more ginger depending on how intense you like the flavor.  It may take some experimentation to figure out exactly how much of each you want to add.  Throw the root slivers into the pot along with a cinnamon stick.  Boil for 15 minutes until the water is thoroughly infused (will turn a pretty dark golden orange color).  Strain into a teacup and add coconut milk and/or honey to taste.

Moderation First

Again, all things with moderation.  I am not a doctor or a registered dietician or alternative medicine expert.  I’m just telling you what I read and sharing a recipe. Don’t go drinking 16 cups of this tea a day (because one of the side effects I saw of too much consumption was gastro problems) and in general you should be mindful of what you put into your body.  Be wise, and enjoy this potentially helpful and definitely delightful hot beverage during cold and flu season.
